The Importance of Electromagnetic Compatibility Testing
Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is a crucial aspect of electronic product design, which involves whether equipment can function properly in different electromagnetic environments. In order to ensure the electromagnetic compatibility of the product, electromagnetic compatibility testing is essential. In electromagnetic compatibility testing, 3-meter and 10 meter anechoic chambers are two common testing environments. What is the difference between them?
Concept and Application of 3-meter Method and 10-meter Method Anechoic Chamber
3-meter anechoic chamber

The 3-meter anechoic chamber is a semi anechoic chamber designed for a 3-meter testing distance, mainly consisting of a main chamber and an operation control room, used for radiation immunity testing and radiation emission compliance testing at a 3-meter distance. A complete darkroom system can cover multiple standards such as CISPR, EN, FCC, GB, etc., and has the ability to upgrade to a full wave darkroom. It can be widely used for electromagnetic compatibility testing in IT products, household appliances, industrial electronic products, communication fields, etc.
Typical shielding dimensions: 9 meters (length) * 6 meters (width) * 6 meters (height).
10 meter anechoic chamber

The 10 meter anechoic chamber is a semi anechoic chamber designed for a testing distance of 10 meters. It mainly consists of a main anechoic chamber and an operation control room, and is used for radiation immunity testing and radiation emission compliance testing at a distance of 10 meters or 3 meters. The 10 meter anechoic chamber is the most widely used standard testing environment, mainly designed to meet the testing needs of large-sized electronic systems and industry testing standards for some electronic products. It can also perform 3-meter testing, and the quiet zone can be expanded to a diameter of 5 meters or even 8 meters or larger. It is widely used for electromagnetic compatibility testing in IT products, household appliances, medical equipment, automotive vehicles and components, industrial electronic systems, communication fields, etc.
Typical shielding dimensions: 21 meters (length) * 12 meters (width) * 9 meters (height).
The difference between 3-meter and 10 meter anechoic chambers
01. Test distance
The most significant difference between 3-meter and 10 meter anechoic chambers is the testing distance. The 3-meter anechoic chamber is suitable for evaluating electromagnetic compatibility at a distance of 3 meters, while the 10 meter anechoic chamber is suitable for evaluating electromagnetic compatibility at a distance of 10 meters.
02. Equipment size
Due to different testing distances, a 3-meter anechoic chamber is suitable for small electronic devices, while a 10 meter anechoic chamber is suitable for large electronic devices. For large equipment, a 10 meter anechoic chamber can better demonstrate its electromagnetic compatibility.
03. Testing Standards
Although 3-meter and 10 meter anechoic chambers are commonly used electromagnetic compatibility testing environments, different countries and regions may have different testing standards and regulations. Therefore, when choosing a testing method, it is necessary to determine based on the specific product and target market.
The 3-meter and 10 meter anechoic chambers have their own advantages in electronic product testing, and the selection needs to be based on factors such as the volume of the tested equipment and testing requirements. When selecting the type of darkroom, factors such as the performance indicators, testing methods, and application fields of the darkroom should be fully considered to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the test results.
The EMC laboratory of GTG Guangce Group has established complete electromagnetic compatibility (EMI, EMS) capabilities in southern China, with one 10m method anechoic chamber, four 3m method anechoic chambers, five shielding chambers, and EMS anti-interference chambers; Among them, a 10m anechoic chamber and a 9 * 6 * 6 chamber meet the EMC testing requirements for medical equipment, with a maximum voltage and current of 380V/200A (three-phase) and 1000V/200 (DC). The testing capability is wide, and the testing data is accurate. It can provide complete national EMC regulations and pre testing services such as CE, FCC, VCCI for electronic manufacturers.
