Smart bands with Bluetooth Low Energy need CE-RED compliance for the European Union. This guide covers the workflow, required files, cost and schedule factors, and market-access risks across regions.GTG EMC Labsupports wearable brands with CE-RED and multi-market planning.

What is CE-RED for smart bands

CE-RED (Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU) is the EU mandatory regime for radio equipment. Smart bands that embed BLE, Wi-Fi or NFC are radio transmitters and must complete conformity assessment and bear the CE marking before entering the EU.

Applies to BLE smart bands, Wi-Fi smart bands, NFC fitness bands

Key basis Safety under IEC 62368-1; radio under ETSI EN 300 328 / EN 301 893

CE-RED process

  1. 1Confirm radio specs: band, channel, power and antenna.
  2. 2Pre-compliance check: screen RF and EMC limits early.
  3. 3Sample testing: RF, EMC, safety and SAR if applicable.
  4. 4Technical file and manual: compile drawings, specs and warnings.
  5. 5Sign the EU Declaration of Conformity (DoC), then affix the CE marking and keep records.

Documents needed

  • CE-RED application and product description
  • Circuit and block diagrams
  • RF spec and antenna data
  • Test reports (RF / EMC / safety)
  • English manual with warnings
  • DoC, label and CE artwork

Cost factors

CE-RED cost is not a single figure. It depends on the number of wireless modes (BLE only, BLE plus Wi-Fi), the test items, how solid the pre-compliance is, and whether a third party coordinates the filing.GTG EMC LabProvide the RF specs first for a scoped quote.

Schedule factors

Schedule depends on wireless complexity, test scope, document readiness and any rework. A first-pass sample with complete files keeps the timeline predictable; added testing or manual updates extend it.

Market access risks

On EU marketplaces, wireless wearables must show CE-RED and the DoC. Note that the UK applies UKCA (accepted in parallel during the transition), while Norway and Switzerland have their own alignments. The US requires FCC, Japan requires TELEC (MIC), Korea requires KC. Coordinate these at the design stage.GTG EMC Labadvises one plan per product.

避坑提示:CE marking is self-declared by the manufacturer with the DoC, but the underlying tests must be done by a capable laboratory. Bundle CE-RED with other target-market marks to avoid repeat work.

Q1 Does a smart band need CE-RED?

If the smart band is sold in the EU and contains radio functions such as BLE, Wi-Fi or NFC, it generally needs CE-RED. A band with no radio function is usually outside this scope.

Q2 What is the difference between CE-RED and FCC?

CE-RED covers the EU market; FCC covers the US market. Different standards and authorities, not interchangeable.

Q3 What about UKCA for the UK?

The UK applies UKCA, which currently runs in parallel with CE-RED during the transition. Confirm the current UK position before shipment.

Q4 Is CE-RED valid in Norway and Switzerland?

Norway follows the EEA and largely mirrors CE-RED; Switzerland has its own alignment. Check the current national rules, as they can differ from the EU.
